Type Locality and Naming
The name of Tongguling Formation was given by the Maoming Geological Company of Guangdong in 1973. The type locality is the Tongguling area of the Maoming basin. Type section is down the No 13 borehole of Maoming (110º55', 21º41').
Lithology and Thickness
The formation is composed of brownish red conglomerate, sandy conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and silty mudstone. It is 38 to 843 m thick.

Lower contact
The formation is unconformably overlying the Sanyajiang Fm.
Upper contact
The formation is underlying the Shangtong Fm.

Fossils
The formation yields ostracods Talicypridea parallela, T. quadrata and T. tumida.
